My experience is that planning our finances has been very beneficial. We have 2 sons in college now, and we are able to use the savings we have stored away over the past 10 years to help pay for their college expenses. What helped us to stick to the plan was to put those savings in very hard-to-reach accounts (out-of-town banks with no debit cards) so that we did not dip into them. Part of planning means knowing my weaknesses and making sure that I don’t succumb to them. As we go forward, we will reflect on what worked for us, and what didn’t – To me, constant reflection is key so that mid-course corrections can be made.
